| Abstract | This paper introduces a research initiative focusing on the development of digital twin concepts for geosystems. Seven teams from thirteen research institutions are developing digitalisation concepts and tools for various geoscientific applications, such as geothermal energy resources and systems, deep geological repositories for radioactive waste disposal and subsurface energy transfer infrastructures. Several workshops have been conducted to identify areas for collaboration and the joint development of software modules, such as generalised interfaces between structural modelling and grid generation for numerical analyses, a common benchmarking platform using Jupyter Notebooks and visualization workflows for virtual reality applications. Although the projects are ongoing, this paper has been prepared to showcase collaboration approaches and intermediate results, and to initiate further collaboration beyond the current projects. The success and speed of digitalisation in the geosciences also depends on the formation of larger development teams, as the development of software for comprehensive workflows is complex and requires collaborative efforts. The paper is organised as follows. First, the challenges and vision are introduced. Secondly, the concept of functional digital twins is introduced, along with a description of their main functionalities. Thirdly, several examples from various geoscientific application areas are presented to demonstrate the current progress. Finally, the way forward is briefly outlined to initiate a discussion on technology transfer levels for digital geosystems. |
