Abstract Agri-environment schemes for biodiversity conservation should be designed in a cost-effective way. Action-based payment schemes (ABP), which compensate farmers for implementing predefined biodiversity-friendly practices, have been criticized for low cost-effectiveness. In contrast, resultbased payment schemes (RBP), which reward farmers for achieving conservation outcomes, offer a promising alternative by directly incentivizing biodiversity gains. Despite growing interest in RBP in research and policy, evidence comparing the cost-effectiveness of ABP and RBP remains anecdotal. Here, we aim to facilitate future research and policy decision-making by providing the tool ABPvsRBPtool which facilitates the cost-effectiveness comparison of ABP vs. RBP in case studies on biodiversity conservation. We first develop a generic ecological-economic model. Our model accounts for key real-world factors, including farmers' heterogeneous risk preferences, diverse conservation activities under RBP, and hybrid schemes where only part of the payment depends on species occurrence. We then demonstrate the application of the tool through a case study on whinchat conservation in Germany, where we find that RBP outperform ABP in cost-effectiveness. We hope that this tool provides a valuable instrument for future research and decision-making in conservation in agricultural landscapes.
