Abstract

The energy sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, necessitating increased investment in renewable energy to achieve decarbonization. While variable renewable energies (VRE) like wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) introduce fluctuations due to weather variability, bioenergy offers flexibility that can alleviate the challenges posed by intermittency on a net-zero emissions energy system. Additionally, biomass contributes to reach climate targets by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This study explores the integration of stochastic elements into the extended bioenergy optimization model (BENOPTex) to assess the interaction between VRE and dispatchable bioenergy. Results indicate that high levels of VRE minimize system costs, whereas bioenergy provides support during periods of limited wind and solar energy availability, albeit at a higher cost.
