| Abstract | Social-ecological transformation is a term used to describe the process that aims to bring our actions and economies back into line with planetary boundaries without ignoring the social and economic issues that arise, Nature conservation and the preservation of biodiversity is an important field of action for a social-ecological transformation. It has long been clear that this requires not only effective nature conservation legislation, but also the integration of biodiversity conservation concerns into various land-use sectors, such as agriculture and forestry, human settlements and water management. Furthermore, it is now also recognised that climate change mitigation concerns not only energy and transport, but also has a land use related dimension as "natural climate change mitigation". This article examines the extent to which the current legal framework paves the way for a social-ecological transformation of nature conservation. In particular, the EU Regulation on nature restoration adopted in June 2024 and the framework conditions for natural climate change mitigation are analysed. Using the example of the rewetting of agriculturally utilised peatlands, it is asked whether the current legal and policy instruments are sufficiently tailored towards achieving complex restoration goals. |
