Abstract Natural/Small-scale Water Retention Measures (NSWRMs) can mitigate conflicts between agricultural water use and other human and ecological demands on water. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about their
effectiveness under different conditions. We present the Horizon 2020 project OPTAIN, which uses a harmonized approach to identify efficient techniques for the retention and reuse of water and nutrients in 14 European case studies. The project workflow, stakeholder-based NSWRM selection, innovative model developments (SWAT+) and simulation results are presented. The next step is to optimize the spatial allocation and combination of NSWRMs, based on environmental and economic sustainability indicators.
