Abstract | Joint production means that several outputs of a single production activity necessarily emerge together. For thermodynamic reasons, all production is joint production, which leads to the ubiquitous generation of wastes. Taking joint production seriously sheds light on central issues in ecological economics, such as irreversibility limits to substitution, and the limits to growth. Considerations of joint production give rise to philosophical concerns relating to responsibility and knowledge. The concept of joint production is easily comprehensible, and is also constitutive and supportive of a range of concepts current in ecological economic thought. |
