Abstract From 1977-2002 the distribution of five colour morphs in Chorthippus parallelus
(according to RICHARDS & WALOFF 1954) was investigated in 19 populations in
Thuringia, Central Germany. Summarizing the more than 4400 individuals (, ),
the morph "dorsal stripe" dominated with 45%, followed by "green" with about
30%, whereas the other three morphs were rare or missing completely. In the
surroundings of Jena the morph distribution differed considerably between five
populations (1984), but without a clear relation to the habitat type. Small scale
differences occurred in nine subpopulations of a mesophilic meadow complex in
the Leutratal near Jena. In a population which was studied in seven years
between 1977-2002 the morph "dorsal stripe" varied around 50%, but since 1983
the morph "green" increased and "brown" decreased. In successive generations
of four populations (1983/84) the intrapopular morph patterns were rather constant,
but the morph percentages changed in different tendencies. The morphs in
a population (Leutratal near Jena) differed significantly in the body measures
(length of pronotum, tegmen and postfemur) with "dorsal stripe" males and
"brown" females as the largest. In wild populations morph-specific differences in
survival, fecundity and macropterism were indicated.
