Abstract According to the German climate action plan, different sectors of the economy have to reach 100% GHG emissions reduction by 2050. The chemicals industry, which is part of the industry sector, will be important in ensuring that this target is achieved. The purpose of this work was to assess the implications, of replacing certain fossil chemicals with renewable ones, on abatement costs and on primary resources availability for the power, heat and transport sectors. For this, a bottom up optimization model (BENOPT) was used for the cost optimal allocation of primary resources across the sectors. Results show that, it is in theory possible with the available primary resources, to replace certain fossil chemicals in order to ensure zero GHG emissions by 2050 for these chemicals but this results in the displacement of 300-600 PJ of primary resources from the power, heat and transport sectors. The recycling of renewable chemicals end products at their end of life is essential for ensuring reduced demand for primary resources but also for reducing GHG abatement costs, therefore, the recycling industry could be an important stakeholder for climate targets in the chemicals sector.
