Abstract The production and utilisation of biological resources (including knowledge) to provide products, processes and services in all sectors of trade and industry within the framework of a sustainable economyt has an impact on many areas of life. The contribution of the bioeconomy to sustainable development is controversial: On the one hand, new processes and concepts can reduce hunger and poverty and support the transition to a renewable resource base; on the other hand, there are risks, e.g. for the natural balance, but also for equitable access to resources. In order to make the bioeconomy sustainable, it is therefore necessary to understand it as a system that is based on a globally limited resource base, uses a wide variety of processes – from open fire places to synthetic biology – and is controlled by different actors. When doing so for Germany, Bioeconomy, however, is not one system, but different subsystems based on many resources such as wood, cultivated biomass, animals, marine biomass, waste, microorganisms and data. Presenting these in their characteristics and expectations and exploring the possibilities for their joint design is the basis for a sustainable bioeconomy system.
