Abstract For several decades, “forced adoptions” (Zwangsadoptionen) in the GDR have led a volatile life in German media often surrounded by sensationalist reporting and intense debates. The topic reached a broader public for the first time in 1975 and 1976 with three articles of the news magazine Der Spiegel. The article of 15 December 1975 publicly associated the GDR with “forced adoptions.” This was not the first time the news magazine reported on the assumed criminal character of adoption proceedings in the “other” German state. Contributing to the reporting at the time was a group of parents who had fled the GDR and who had undertaken everything possible, including demonstrating on the occasion of the Helsinki Final Act, to bring their children still residing in the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany. In reunited Germany, over the last ten years or so victims’ associations such as the “Association of Children from Forced Adoptions” (Zwangsadoptierte Kinder) and the “Association of Stolen Children in the GDR” (Interessengemeinschaft gestohlene Kinder der DDR e. V.) and also individuals have endeavoured with increasing intensity to raise public awareness and achieve public recognition of their concerns. Their actions have found particular resonance in the print media, notably tabloids, television and online media. German (academic) literature up to and after 1990 mentions specific cases of forced adoptions in the GDR or their preliminary stages in terminating parental rights or custody (Brümmer, 1980, 83; Wedel, 2005, 90-95; Kühn, 2014, 30)
