Abstract High-temperature combustion of brown coal is known to emit ferromagnetic minerals with large values of the magnetic susceptibility. Analysis of two-year old needles from the pine Pinus sylvestris L. sampled in the first quarter of 1992 at 31 sites in the region Leipzig-Halle shows that fly ash deposition from power plant on the needle surface can be detected by a correspondingly enhanced magnetic susceptibility of the needle material. Needles of conifer stands thus offer an efficient tool to identify and analyze areas that are subject to imission of brown coal fly ash and associated compounds.
