Abstract Needles from young Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) were collected at two field sites (Neuglobsow and Rosa) in eastern Germany as part of the ongoing SANA project. These sites differed markedly in SO2 and NOx,but not in O3 pollution. From 1984 to 1994, SO2 pollution decreased, while NOx pollution increased at both sites. To measure the effect of changed air pollution on the vitality of pine trees, we measured various (bio)chemical parameters in current year's needles. In needles from the highly polluted site Rosa, the amounts of sulphate and non-protein nitrogen, the activity of superoxide dismutase isozymes, the δ15N values and the index of needle necrosis were significantly higher than in needles from the less polluted site Neuglobsow. The results show that temporal variations of the sulphate content and the derived Sorg/SO4-ratio are highly correlated with decreased SO2 concentration in the air at both sites, while the non-protein nitrogen and the derived Nprot/Nnprot-ratio remained unchanged. SOD and the index of needle necrosis indicated no clear changes. It is not clear whether the unchanged high necrosis index of young pine trees at both sites were caused by changes in the antioxidative system or by changes of the sulphur/nitrogen status in the needles, or both.
