Abstract Derelict open cast mines or quarries may become habitat for species rich flora and fauna. However, in order to play a role in the conservation of genetic resources, genetic variability of plant and animal populations has to be comparably high as those on natural sites. In two case studies we analyse genetic variability at microsatellite loci between populations on natural and anthropogenic sites. The orchid Gymnadenia conopsea is a typical species of calcareous grasslands but is also found in quarries and open cast mines. Genetic variability was equally high in both habitat types. This may be due to the numerous dust-like seeds that allow colonization of derelict sites by many founding individuals without genetic bottleneck. Natural populations of the earwig Labidura riparia are rare and restricted to the coast and a few inland sand dune systems in Central Europe. However, the species is found also in sandy open cast mines, military training areas and mining stockpiles. Genetic variability was higher in anthropogenic than in natural habitats, which may be due to a larger population size. The natural populations from the German coast were also genetically differentiated from the anthropogenic populations suggesting that the latter have been colonized from other source populations. Together both case studies suggest that anthropogenic sites may provide secondary habitat for populations that are large enough to harbour considerable genetic variability comparable to natural populations.
