Abstract Selected results from standard lysimeters were compared with results gained with On-Line Lysimeters and Deep Drainage Meters (DDM) according to G.W.Gee in order to test the suitability of lysimeters of different design for special tasks. A comparison of the seepage water amount under grassland showed conformity despite of different construction. It can be conclude that for selected tasks, like the monitoring of water resources, the usage of standard lysimeters is sufficient to gain basic soil-hydrological parameters. The On-Line Lysimeter which enables us to quantify seepage formation at the bottom of the lysimeter vessel with high spatial resolution especially offers opportunities to describe pathways of water flux in the soil column quantitatively and qualitatively. Long term lysimeter results showed that only limited areas are involved in the seepage water formation during precipitation events with average intensity. The different participation of flow pathways can implicate on the one hand comparable amounts of seepage water. On the other hand clear differences concerning the loads are visible.
