Abstract | The analysis of engineered nanomaterials in environmental waters is a challenging task because nanomaterials are likely to be released gradually, in low numbers, and diluted into large and mobile water bodies, such as creeks, rivers, lakes, and oceans. While engineered nanomaterials are diluted in these waters, they are also mingled with a multitude of natural particles of various sizes and compositions that together with natural organic substances comprise a complex particulate matrix with regional variations. Dissolved components are also likely to adsorb and react on the nanoparticles surface, thus altering their surface characteristics. Detecting nanomaterials in such complex and dynamic systems requires the combination of several analytical techniques. This article offers an overview of the currently available techniques and provides a generic strategy that can be adjusted according to the characteristics and hydrochemical properties of the water sample. |
