Abstract The use of renewable resources has been increasing as efforts to mitigate climate change have been amplified. In the power, heat and transport fuels sectors, the use of biomass has experienced an upward trajectory owing to policies such as the Renewable Energy Directives (REDs) in Europe. Biomass usage for biochemical applications has however remained low. This loopsided emphasis for biomass allocation to bioenergy and biofuels conversely defeats the puporse of effective biomass utilisation for climate change mitigation. Analyses of the potential role of biomass for biochemicals are therefore relevant. The purpose of this work was to identify biochemicals with the potential to technically substitute fossil reference technologies and highlight their environmental and economic perfomances. Results show that the identified biochemicals offer significant GHG savings especially when end products of drop in biochemicals are recycled and not used for energy recovery after their end of life. The economic perfomances are however inferior to their fossil counterparts with the exception of succinic acid
