Abstract The increasing proportion of intermittent renewable energies in the future electricity system asks for further technologies for balancing demand and intermittent electricity generation to ensure a sufficient power supply. In this paper, we analyzed the contributions of three biogas extension paths and flexible power generation options in the year 2035. To optimize the flexible power generation, a non-linear optimization model was developed and applied. Results show, that higher number of flexible biogas plants can reduce balancing requirements by smoothing the residual load curve. The best result was generated in the extension path biogas increase and plant configuration B2 with increasing capacities of biogas plants within the future renewable energy portfolio and high flexibility. In addition, the results indicate that biogas plants should be generating electricity in a flexible way. High biogas storage capacities and flexible biogas production allow a longer temporal shift of electricity generation. In conclusion, flexible biogas plants might be one option to integrate intermittent renewable energies into the future electricity system.
