Abstract In this study the flow paths in three different soils are analysed in small lysimeters with the use of two tracers: potassium bromide for determination the breakthrough curve and the dye Brilliant Blue FCF (Color Index 42090) for visualizing the flow paths in soil. For the silty calcaric cambisol the breakthrough curve indicates the existence of preferential flow due to a residence volume for bromide of 48 % in comparison to the water amount in the case of full field capacity. As a result of dye marking the upper layers of the two silty soils show a homogenous matrix flow. In the clay soil shrinking cracks and fingering flow were observed on the textural boarders. But under the plough horizon Brilliant Blue was not to be found a suitable tracer for visualizing the water flow, because of its strong adsorption to the soil components. Therefore in all lysimeters a strong edge effect occurred up to a depth of 30 cm. Furthermore the ionic situation (Corg, Pox, Alox, Feox and Ca), in- and outside of the flow paths was compared without finding significant differences. But the tendency shows that in the tillage horizon the most dyed areas had a lower ionic content in contrast to the not-flow paths. Below the plough zone the contrary phenomenon was observed.
