Abstract | The low solubility and high hydrophobicity of hydrocarbons means that they sorb to various solids and nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs), obliging hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms to physically interact with these phases. This has various implications for the physicochemical characteristics of these microbes, their modes of hydrocarbon uptake, and their behavioral and physiological strategies aimed at promoting such interactions. |
