Abstract Understanding the behavior of contaminants in subsurface is helpful to implement effective management and remediation measures. Two-dimensional experiments were conducted to investigate the contributions of soil organic matter (SOM) and soil porosity to toluene transport in three unsaturated soils (i.e., black soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and red soil). The vertical migration distance of toluene in the three soils followed the order of fluvo-aquic soil > black soil > red soil and the lateral migration distance of toluene in the three soils followed the order of red soil > black soil > fluvo-aquic soil. The transport of toluene in the three soils is only to a small extent dependent on the sorption behavior of SOM, but influenced by the soil porosity distribution.
