Abstract Soil health is an important parameter affecting plant productivity, and the organisms inhabiting the soil adjacent to plant roots, the rhizosphere, have a strong influence on plant fitness. In this review we will discuss the key roles that microbial species play in the rhizosphere of plants, including bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Particular emphasis is placed on plant beneficial microbes: mycorrhizal fungi that have a profound positive influence on the growth of most land plants and plant beneficial rhizobacteria, the investigation of which has given us detailed information on microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions. Our review concludes with perspectives for future research, emphasizing the need of combining several methodological areas to obtain a coherent picture of the interactions in the rhizosphere.
