Abstract | For regional approaches dealing with first generation bioenergy production, biomass availability for a bioenergy plant is one of the most crucial parameters to calculate. Land Cover Maps such as the CORINE LC (DLR, 2009) provide information on land use within the region and how it is distributed spatially across the region. The crop allocation model (CRAM) was developed to give an approximate location of regional arable crop cultivation, using C++ programming tools, GIS and readily available statistical data. The region of focus is Central Germany (CG), which includes the federal districts of Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. The cropping area was calculated for eight different crops: winter wheat, rye, summer barley and winter barley, sugar beet, maize, winter rape seed and legumes. The output of the crop allocation model (CRAM) is to provide an approximate location for the different crops under specified constraints for a given year. Thus, making it possible to calculate the distance from the field to the biomass plant and furthermore, it enables a better estimation of GHG emissions of the regional biomass supply chains. |
