Abstract Water management often aims at two conflicting goals: On the one hand, humans need to be supplied with high-quality drinking water. On the other hand, a sustainable agricultural production has to be facilitated in the region where groundwater recharge takes place. This paper presents the first results of a project that aims at a better understanding of this problem. Therefore, the Flaeming region in eastern Germany has been selected as a model region. The measurement concept, a bottom-up approach which focuses on the measuring of pedo-hydrological data at different agricultural and forestry used sites and the scaling-up of these data to model realistic scenarios for sustainable land management strategies for the investigated region is described.
These water management activities in the sensitive Flaeming region are embedded in the interdisciplinary joint research project “Sustainable Land Management in the North German Lowland – NaLaMa-nT”, sponsored by the German Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) from September 2010 until August 2015. The aim of the entire project is to develop a knowledge and decision basis for a sustainable land management concept in four representative model regions in the northern part of Germany (administrative districts Diepholz, Uelzen, Flaeming, and Oder-Spree). The scientific work is divided into 21 subprojects dealing with climatology, water management, agriculture, forestry, and socio-economic aspects.
