Abstract | Urban water resources are frequently polluted by micropollutants originating from wastewater. Since the urban water cycle is characterized by complex interaction between surface water, groundwater and the wastewater system we applied an integral approach to quantify the annual micropollutant mass flow from an urban drainage area (sewershed). Over the course of one year, concentrations of several micropollutants were monitored in untreated and treated wastewater and in groundwater. In combination with models of annual urban water flow, micropollutant mass flow was derived. The mass release was highest for the treated wastewater pathway to the surface water. Nevertheless, through the pathway of combined sewer overflow (CSO) and groundwater discharge out of the sewershed boundaries a significant part of the annual mass flow was released. As a consequence, the mass release by CSO and groundwater discharge should be taken into account in micropollutant assessments. |
