Abstract The requirements of environmental monitoring programs such as the European Water Framework Directive demand for holistic methodological approaches that address the problems of concern or reasons for sampling unambiguously and specify the objectives of the program and the indicators to be sampled clearly. In this context, the sampling strategies and methods used are of essential importance, because they are an inherent part of the entire analytical and assessment process. In this chapter, the scope, purposes, and requirements of the sampling process are discussed with a focus on water types such as surface water (lakes, streams, and rivers), groundwater, and wastewater regarding to an integrative approach.
