Abstract During the work on the self mandate (EFSA-Q-2009-408) on "Good Practice in Conducting Scientific Assessments in Animal Health Using Modelling", it was found to be necessary to describe and evaluate models that previously were applied in opinions adopted by the AHAW Panel. Therefore, a scientific review was undertaken on the past 31 animal health (AH) related opinions passed by the AHAW Panel. To summarise reviewed material modelling tasks were classified in three categories (assessment of diagnostic test characteristics, disease transmission and end point quantification) and models in four categories (decision tree models, compound probability, meta-analysis and spread models). The review revealed that modelling was frequently applied to substantiate EFSA-AHAW opinions. No temporal patterns could be identified in the application of models. The main purpose of modelling was to improve understanding. Applied model types were specific to the addressed tasks stated in mandates with some indicative exceptions. Striking was the predominance of decision tree based models to address complex end-point questions. This is probably due to their assistance in structuring complex problems and data. This form of model application shifted the model purpose from prediction (requested by the modelling task) to understanding.
