Abstract

In this article we discuss the forms of knowledge and the dynamics of interaction as well as the specific spatial effects of two expanding fields of innovation: medical technology and aircraft construction. Based on expert interviews, we compare the strategies of gaining access to different forms of knowledge of the multinationals Siemens and Philips (medical technology) at their sites in Erlangen and Eindhoven as well as EADS Airbus (aircraft construction) in Toulouse and Hamburg. The global players’ KnowledgeScapes, which are characterized by relational openings, progressively take into account and involve the knowledge and demand side of customers in the case of Siemens/Philips and suppliers in the case of EADS Airbus. A key element of both product development processes is the creation of “domain knowledge” in combination with hard and soft networks of competency that have different space structuring effects. Intensified global competition, in particular, provokes intensive interactions and confluence of knowledge, space and milieu, which we identify as the “coevolution concept”.
