Environmental Impacts of Plastics: Moving beyond the perspective on waste

The effects of plastic on the three planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution: scientific knowledge is still patchy and unevenly distributed.

The fact that plastics pollute the environment and generate problems has been well-researched in many areas. However, there is little information on the impacts of plastics on climate and biodiversity. In an overview study for the journal Environment International, an interdisciplinary research team from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) has analysed the impacts of plastics on the three planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution. They are calling for plastics regulations that account for the multifaceted impacts of plastics in these three crises. The negotiations on the UN Global Plastics Treaty by the end of November in Busan (South Korea) represented an opportunity to introduce such regulations.

A multidisciplinary perspective on the role of plastic pollution in the tripleplanetary crisis (PlasticsFatE; youtube)
Dezember 2024

The effects of plastic on the three planetary crises
Photo: Annika Jahnke

Our AI podcasters discuss this short communication from Schmidt et al. (2024) which examines the multifaceted impact of plastic pollution on the "triple planetary crisis"—environmental pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The authors synthesize existing research to highlight critical knowledge gaps concerning the lifecycle, release, fate, exposure, and hazards of plastics and associated chemicals, emphasizing the understudied roles of plastic additives and in-use plastics. They advocate for a holistic, multidisciplinary approach bridging natural and social sciences to achieve effective plastic governance and risk management, ultimately aiming to mitigate the plastics crisis and protect Earth's ecosystems and human health. The paper's structure progresses through a review of existing knowledge, an identification of knowledge gaps, and the proposal of future research directions focused on comprehensive hazard assessment and improved regulation.

The scientists Dr. Nicole Meyer and Dr. Florence Fischer were guests on the Podcast „Forschungsquartett“. They talked about the environmental chemicals we are exposed to every day, the dangers some of them pose and how the public and pregnant women in particular can better protect themselves against them. As part of the „SAFE-Challenge“ project, the two collected ideas until November 30 to reach new target groups with the topic.
