Monitoring Biodiversity
To determine whether the 2010-target of halting the loss of biodiversity can be accomplished, sufficient basic data and long-term observations are required.

The UFZ coordinates the German nationwide Butterfly Monitoring.

Various UFZ-projects make their contribution, for example the German nationwide Butterfly Monitoring, which is scientifically coordinated by the Department of Community Ecology and was initiated in 2005 by a campaign in cooperation with BUND and ZDF. Other examples are the search and information system BIOLFLOR – database on biological and ecological traits of the flora of Germany (project in cooperation with BfN - Federal Agency for Nature Conservation) and the EU-funded project EUMON, which collects and evaluates monitoring schemes all over Europe and develops recommendations for their use on an European level (coordinated by the Department of Conservation Biology).
