Abstract Membrane extraction is a promising technology for fast and inexpensive sample preparation. To determine phenols, as well as benzene, toluene m-xylene (BTX) and other volatile compounds from one solution a new extraction cell with four flat membranes is developed. It is shown, that the new extraction cell can be used in an off-line and on-line mode. In the on-line mode the extraction cell is connected with a mobile gaschromatograph. The response behaviour and the stability of the calibrations in this configuration is examined. The simultaneous extraction of phenols and BTX is carried out with two different membranes (silicone and supported liquid membrane) in the off-line mode. It can be shown, that BTX are extracted by the silicone membrane, whereas the supported liquid membrane is much more suitable for the phenols than the silicone membrane. The goal of this extraction cell is, that a sample with analytes of different polarity can extracted by different extraction mechanisms at the same time.
