Abstract Floodplains are among the most valuable ecosystems worldwide. At the same time they belong to the most endangered ecosystems. A first nationwide inventory investigated the loss and current status of German floodplains. Based on this research we developed methods to quantify and assess floodplain functions for 79 large rivers in Germany.
