Land Use Conflicts

Land is a limited resource. Every parcel of land on our planet can basically only be assigned to one specific use. Whether this is for urban development and infrastructure, agriculture and forestry, mining and industry or nature conservation, every decision made in favour or against land-use change can result in unforeseeable changes, conflicts, opportunities or new development potential.

Natural- and social scientists are therefore conducting investigations on agricultural and urban landscapes in terms of the impacts that land-use change will have on biodiversity and ecosystem services and at the same time analysing conflicting objectives and stakeholder interests. Ultimately, recommendations for land-use management strategies, suitable steering instruments and approaches will be put forward that intend to steer land use in a direction that will avoid land-use conflicts, exploit potential and preserve biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Legal and other instruments for better protection of the environment in the agricultural sector
Link summary

Cover Book This study investigated how national environmental and agricultural law could be used to a greater extent than thus far to steer development towards sustainable eco-and-climate-friendly agricultural practices.

The aim was to analyse existing legal instruments and identify potential ways of improving them with a view to achieving society’s environmental objectives and eliminating the environmental threats posed by agriculture in Germany today and those expected to arise in the future.
