Biodiversity Science is facing enormous challenges as the pressures upon the earth’s biotic systems are rapidly intensifying and we are unlikely to reach the CBD 2020 Aichi Targets. But how far or close are we to reach the Aichi targets is virtually impossible to assess. In fact, the biodiversity community is still lacking a global observing system that evolves around the monitoring of a set of agreed biodiversity variables essential to the tracking of biological diversity on Earth. Such a gap is worrying, as operational systems of this kind and associated identification of priority variables to be monitored are key to (i) coordinating globally consistent data collection across all dimensions of biodiversity, and (ii) minimizing duplication of efforts, so that conservation funds are not wasted.

We have the pleasure of inviting you (again) to a seminar in the frame of our Exposome Lecture Series: Dr. Dalma Martinović-Weigelt from University of St. Thomas, USA, will talk about "Integrating chemical monitoring data with high-content and high-throughput effects data to prioritize contaminants and hazards in chemical mixtures"
Abstract: Determining ecological risks associated with exposures to complex chemical mixtures in the environment is one of the main challenges of chemical safety assessment and environmental protection. Effects-based monitoring tools that can measure the integrated biological activity of an entire mixture have been proposed as one of the solutions. An important limitation of the effects-based approaches is that they typically do not provide insight into which chemicals are causing the observed biological responses. Current approaches for integrating chemical monitoring with biological effects data will be discussed. More specifically, we will present and critically evaluate two approaches where prior knowledge regarding toxicity of individual contaminants is combined with empirical in situ assessment to predict toxicity of mixtures and prioritize contaminants. First approach involves development of knowledge assembly model (KAM; which is specific to the aquatic system of interest) based on chemical monitoring data and publically available chemical-gene interaction data. Follow-up fish transcriptomics studies and reverse causal reasoning approaches are then utilized to prioritize risks and contaminants. Second approach utilizes publically available high-throughput in vitro data to extract benchmark effect concentrations for hundreds of biological targets. From these data, exposure-to-activity ratios are calculated and integrated with empirical in vitro effects assessment to prioritize specific chemicals for further testing and to identify biological effects of interest. Observed/predicted molecular-level effects data generated by above approaches can be integrated with adverse outcome pathway knowledge to aid extrapolation into regulatory outcomes of concern (e.g., organism- and population-level effects).

This workshop aims at analyzing the challenges with Persistent and Mobile Organic Chemicals (PMOCs) in water cycles, discussing consequences for drinking water quality and elaborating solutions that technology and regulation may provide.
The workshop addresses the following questions:
• How to identify a PMOC and what is known about the occurrence, sources and fate of PMOCs in the water cycle?
• Are drinking water resources (surface water and groundwater) adequately protected?
• Which technologies can act as barriers against PMOCs in the water cycle?
• Do we need water quality standards for PMOCs?
• Can chemical industry prevent future emissions of PMOCs into the environment?
• How way the EU regulations REACH regulation support the protection of drinking water resources against PMOCs?
Researchers, practitioners, regulators and further stakeholders from national and EU level are invited to discuss the issue of PMOCs with a focus on approaches for their future control, including removal and prevention.
Over the next five years, nine research centres of the Helmholtz Association will collaborate to create a flexible, mobile measuring system for Earth observation: MOSES – Modular Observation Solutions for Earth Systems (http://moses.eskp.de/home/). The highly flexible system will be used to investigate how short-term dynamic events such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall are linked to the long-term development of Earth and environmental systems.
The participating centres will develop, miniaturise and automate sensor and measuring systems, which will then be combined to form specific modules. These will record energy, water, greenhouse gas and nutrient cycles on the land surface, in coastal regions, in the ocean, in snow and ice regions, and in the atmosphere – but especially the interactions between Earth compartments. The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ is the coordinating centre.
We’ll invite all interested people at UFZ to join our informational meeting. Here, the MOSES infrastructure, the relevant dynamic events and the related research questions will be presented.
Schedule:

Fertile soils are a prerequisite for plant production and the fundamental basis for terrestrial bio-economic value chains. In a sustainable development perspective, the performance of soils in providing high yields have to be integrated with the provision of a wide range of ecosystem services. These include habitats for organisms and gene pools (biodiversity), cleaning of water and air, nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas mitigation, carbon sequestration, buffering of weather extremes, cooling, flood control, cultural assets, recreation and human health assets. At the same time, sustainable soil management implies the efficient utilization of natural resources including water, energy, land, and nutrients. The resource efficient optimization of such soil services requires a systemic understanding of the biological, chemical and physical processes interacting in the soil system as well as its dynamics with soil management. BonaRes conducts research to improve the evidence base for sustainable soil management.
The BonaRes funding initiative integrates 10 interdisciplinary collaborative projects as well as the BonaRes Centre. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

UFZ EnergyDays 2018
Energy Landscapes of Today and TomorrowThe Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ welcomes you to the EnergyDays 2018 in Leipzig, Germany. On 24 and 25 September 2018, the integrated project EnergyLandUse invites you to attend this year's EnergyDays with a special focus on “Energy Landscapes of Today and Tomorrow”. The large-scale expansion of renewable energies is characterized by more decentralized and consequently more land-intensive production patterns than conventional energy supply systems. This brings about important new sustainability challenges, including extensive spatio-environmental impacts, reliability of energy supply and social compatibility. Understanding the challenges associated with new energy landscapes and exploring potential solutions is the focus of the Energy Days 2018. The conference aims to understand the regional, national and European effects and trade-offs which are associated with new technologies and other system elements of energy transitions in their economic, ecological and social dimensions. Based on this, it explores options for organizing a sustainable spatial allocation of renewable energy provision. The conference will foster the exchange between land-use-oriented energy research at the UFZ and the national and international scientific community.
To discuss recent progress in research on the spatial dimension of energy transitions, we welcome abstracts related to the following subjects:
- Spatial allocation of renewable energies
- Spatial assessment of renewable energy potentials
- Environmental and social impacts of renewable energy expansion
- Governance of energy landscapes
- (Un)Fairness, (in)justice and (un)acceptance regarding the use of renewable energies

Diskussion:

MIKAT Symposium on Cyanobacteria
From gene and protein functions to biotechnologyCyanobacteria are increasingly used as microbial cell factories to
produce chemicals and/or energy carriers driven by photosynthesis
directly. These attempts require a deep understanding of their
physiology and biochemistry on the one hand and molecular tools for
genetic engineering on the other. However, our current knowledge about
cyanobacteria is staying behind other bacterial groups. Accordingly, the
above mentioned attempts still reside in a proof of concept stage and
hence, further research is required to exploit the full biotechnological
potential of cyanobacteria.
Our symposium brings together the major expertises required to address

hochwasserangepasstes Bauen in gefährdeten Gebieten
konsequenter umgesetzt und die Eigenvorsorge
gestärkt werden kann. Ergänzt wird die Fachtagung
durch eine Ausstellung zu verschiedenen Möglichkeiten
der baulichen Hochwassereigenvorsorge.
Science Talk UFZ: Prof. Bruce A. Hungate
Ecosystem Science & Society Center, Northern Arizona University, USATitle: Frontiers in biogeochemistry: from microbes to ecosystems

Title: Obesity - another symptom of an "unhealthy environment"?Abstract The prevalence of obesity (in Germany: 24%) has increased worldwide by pandemic dimensions in recent decades, and it represents a major health challenge to many societies. Besides musculoskeletal or lung disorders caused by being overweight, obesity as a metabolic disorder also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and some types of cancer, thereby contributing to a decline in quality of life and life expectancy. Furthermore, obesity is strongly associated with unemployment, educational disadvantage, and social isolation. Obesity will create an immense economic burden associated with long-term nursing care as well as a reduction in fitness, reproduction rate, and socioeconomic productivity. In Germany, excess body weight costs our society over 16 billion euros per year. In the past years, our understanding of the causes and consequences of obesity improved significantly. However, such progress in understanding pathogenesis and improving therapies for individual patients does not tell us how to reverse obesity at the societal level. Thus, while we are beginning to understand how the craving for food is disturbed in the brains of individuals with obesity and how gut or adipose tissue hormones regulate appetite and satiety, we are currently unable to translate such knowledge into successful prevention. To this end, we need to better understand how environmental factors and our society contribute to the obesity pandemic. We are particularly interested in addressing the question to what extent environmental chemicals that were enriched in our environment over the past decades may play a role in the pathogenesis of obesity.

Topic: The Coastal Pollution Toolbox – a Topic 4 product within POFIVAbstract
The Coastal Pollution Toolbox (CPT) is the substance related component of the Coastal Management Toolkit to be developed in Topic 4, “Coastal Transition Zones under Natural and Human Pressure” jointly with strategic partners (UFZ, AWI, GEOMAR).
The CPT is designed as a digital working environment and tool set to study contaminant, nutrient and carbon dynamics in temperate and polar coastal zones. It allows to structure investigations and to provide scientifically sound assessments and products to elucidate origin, effects, and mitigation options. The CPT sustainably seeks to support the implementation of several UN SDGs with SDG 14 and its target 14.1 as one focal point, i.e. to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds by 2025, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
CPT consists of 3 main tool compartments containing (i) science tools, (ii) synthesis tools and (iii) management tools.
The presentation will describe the CPT concept and will give examples for tools ready to use for stakeholders involved in the planning and management of coastal and marine issues as well as tools under construction.
Goals are (i) to connect CPT to ongoing related UFZ research within POFIV and strategically (ii) to make it widely visible for the scientific community, decision makers, planners and the public.

Lecture HEALTHY PLANET: Dr. Jake O'Brien "The benefits of conducting wastewater is online
sampling during a population census - case study using the Australian Census"Abstract
Wastewater contains a large range of biological and chemical markers of human activity and exposures. Through systematic collection and analysis of these markers within wastewater samples it is possible to measure the public health of whole populations. The analysis of effluent and biosolids can also be used to understand the release of chemicals from wastewater treatment plants into the environment. Wastewater analysis and comparison with catchment specific data (e.g. demographics) however remains largely unexplored. This presentation discusses a national wastewater monitoring study that combines influent, effluent and biosolids sampling with the Australian Census.

Lecture HEALTHY PLANET: Dr. Quiguo Fu "Fate processes and biological effects of is online
pharmaceuticals in the aquatic organisms: A case study with diclofenac"Abstract: Chemical pollution has raised global concerns for human health and the environment. Thousands of chemicals are regularly released into the environment from various sources (e.g., households, agriculture) and can enter the environment through different pathways (e.g., wastewater effluent, urban and agricultural runoff). Many of these compounds are designed to be biologically active (i.e., pesticides, pharmaceuticals), hence even at trace concentrations in the ng/L to μg/L range, they may adversely affect non-target organisms when being taken up. Herein, we apply state-of-the-art analytical chemistry techniques to systematically understand the fate processes and toxic effects of emerging organic contaminants in aquatic and terrestrial organisms. I will use diclofenac as an example to elaborate on how biotransformation and elimination processes influence the accumulation and toxicity of chemicals in organisms. Furthermore, I will show how metabolomics and lipidomics provide complementary insights and thus a better mechanistic understanding of the effects of diclofenac in aquatic organisms.

Frontiers in experimental research on changing environments
Experimental ecosystem research contributes significantly to better understanding how terrestrial ecosystems respond to human-induced environmental change, to deciphering the mechanisms behind these responses, and to enabling more sustainable land-use practices. During our conference, we will discuss the current status and the progress of field experiments in ecological and environmental research on a global scale. Symposium topics range from the effects of land-use change, climate change, air and soil pollution, and nutrient inputs on ecosystems to changing biodiversity and interactions in the above- and below-ground soil-plant system.
