Leipzig Green Roof Academy

Aims of the Green Roof Academy

The aim of the Green Roof Academy is to introduce the topic of green roofs and the possibility of their multifunctional use into education. The ideas developed in the Green Roof Academy are intended to serve as suggestions for the city of Leipzig on how urban green roofs could be designed.

The structure of the Green Roof Academy:
1. kick-off event with teaching of the basics
2. excursion to urban green roofs and the UFZ research green roof
3. development of green roof concepts for a given object (group work, supported by practice partners)
4. presentation of the results with an award ceremony.

The Green Roof Academy is aimed at students from a wide range of disciplines (e.g. architecture, landscape architecture, environmental planning, nature conservation, energy, building and environmental technology, urban ecology, real estate management, spatial development and natural resource management). The interdisciplinary nature of the course means that many topics are integrated into the concepts, such as adaptation to climate change, species protection, sustainable construction and social aspects.

Award ceremony of the 4th Leipzig Green Roof Academy

On 14 November 2022, the award ceremony of the 4th Leipzig Green Roof Academy took place in the New Town Hall of the city of Leipzig. In three groups, seven students from different disciplines developed concepts for a green roof system on the future primary school building and the adjacent sports hall in Anger-Crottendorf and presented them at the award ceremony.

One of the first prizes went to the team "Juncus" with students from the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the HTWK, which impressed with its well thought-out and integrated roof concept, which also took up the local environment of the new school building in terms of design and offered numerous opportunities to open the classroom for project work and environmental education embarrassed. But also the green roof projects developed by the other groups and awarded with further cash prizes were characterized by creative and varied ideas, such as the coupling of energy production and green roof in the form of photovoltaics and wind turbines, the creation of biodiversity oases on the roofs and the integration of the green roofs in the rainwater concept for the entire property.

We would like to thank the practice partners (companies ZinCo, OptiGrün and Leipziger Wasserwerke) for their active support in the form of an advisory function for the students during the creation of their designs and their contribution in the form of prize money. Furthermore, we would like to thank the association Freunde und Förderer des UFZ e.V. for their uncomplicated support in transferring the prize money to the winners. A big thank you also goes to the Office for Environmental Protection of the City of Leipzig for co-organizing the academy.
