    Research

    Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in many parts of the world, essential for field irrigation, an irreplaceable process medium in the industry and becoming increasingly important for the heating sector (generation and storage). This creates usage conflicts that are intensified by increasing water demand and the effects of climate change with significant impacts on humans, the environment and economic development.

    We therefore develop measurement concepts and strategies to better understand and describe the geological subsurface and groundwater resources. We facilitate a more sustainable use of groundwater resources with our work.

    The research of the Direct Push and Hydrogeological Measurement Methods research field focuses on the

    • high-resolution characterization of complex shallow unconsolidated aquifers;
    • ecological and economical sustainable intensive use of shallow geothermal energy on urban quarter scale;
    • optimization of Managed Aquifer Recharge infrastructure planning and operation to overcome water scarcity.
