Organisation structure

Organisation chart

The organisation chart of the UFZ provides an overview of the scientific and administrative organisation structure.

Organisation of the UFZ research

To support its integrative research approach to environmental research, the UFZ’s research is organized into six strategic thematic areas, to which a total of 36 methodically organised departments are assigned. This range of departments emphasizes the tremendous breadth of specialist subjects and just how diverse research is at the UFZ.

Structure of the thematic areas and their departments

These thematic areas are intended to make up the core of the UFZ’s research over the next ten years. They reflect the core subjects and the cross-sectional competences of the UFZ and are linked to one another through large Integrated Projects (IPs).

Research at the UFZ is assigned to the Helmholtz research fields of "Earth and Environment" (Programme "Terrestrial Environment" / 85 percent of UFZ resources), the research field "Health" (Programme "Genes and Environment in Common Diseases” / 8 percent) as well as the research field "Energy" (Programmes "Renewable Energies" & "Technology, Innovation and Society" / 7 percent).

UFZ’s hallmark is its integrated environmental research: Scientists from different Departments pool their competences in eleven Integrated Projects (IPs). In this way, all Departments are connected through particular projects in a matrix organisation (see matrix structure chart).
