My research focuses on the anaerobic/anoxic microbial transformation of antibiotics, in particular sulfonamides that are widely used for human and veterinary purposes. Their incomplete removal in conventional wastewater treatment plants and frequent presence in various environmental matrices raise concerns on the formation and spread of antibiotic resistance. Understanding the fate and improving the removal of sulfonamides is the main objective of my research. For this purpose, I develop and apply microbiological, molecular, analytical chemistry and engineering methods.
