Research

My research focuses on anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria that uses ammonium and nitrite for respiration. I am interested in isolating anammox in pure culture, identify proteins involved in the respiratory process and to characterize their activities. I am also interested in synergizing anammox bacteria with hydrocarbon degrading bacteria for strategic management of multiple streams of waste in anoxic treatment work flow as well as to stabilize anammox process by understanding anammox interactions with different compounds that are prevalent in waste water.
