Modellfamilie zur Untersuchung künftiger Transformationspfade der energetischen Biomassenutzung im Strom-, Transport- und Wärmesektor. Die letzten publizierten Modellvarianten sind online verfügbar mit einer open source Lizenz: BENSIM / BENOPT.

BENSIM (BioENergy SImulation Model) und BENOPT (BioENergy OPTimisation model) sind entwickelt worden, um den Wettbewerb zwischen Technologieoptionen darzustellen – mit besonderem Fokus auf Bioenergie in Deutschland. BENSIM/BENOPT existiert in zwei Hauptvarianten: (1) ein myopisches, rekursives Simulationsmodell, das den kostengünstigsten Technologiemix unter bestimmten Rahmenbedingungen sucht (BENSIM), und (2) ein perfect foresight Optimierungsmodell, was die optimale Allokation von Biomasse über verschiedenen Sektoren und Zielfunktionen untersucht (BENOPT).
BENOPT ist ein Modell zur Optimierung des Einsatzes planbarer erneuerbarer Energieträger. Es können zwei Zielfunktionen verwendet oder kombiniert werden: Treibhausgasvermeidung oder Kostenminimierung für die Erfüllung gesetzter energetischer oder THG-Ziele. In Kombination können Pareto-Analysen durchgeführt werden.

BENOPT enthält Sektoren für Verkehr (Straßenpersonenverkehr, Straßengüterverkehr, Schifffahrt und Luftfahrt), Strom und Wärme (Industrie, Haushalte und Gewerbe). Die Integration wichtiger chemischer Produkte ist geplant. Das Modell arbeitet mit einer jährlichen Auflösung (mit Ausnahme der Modellierung der Residuallast im Stromsektor, welche auf eine stündliche Auflösung heruntergebrochen wird) und ist nicht räumlich explizit. Detaillierte Input-Output-, Capex- und Opex-Daten sind für Rohstoffe, Umwandlung und Versorgung integriert, was detaillierte Kostenanalysen und in Kombination mit relevanten Emissionsfaktoren auch Treibhausgasanalysen ermöglicht.

Es wurden eigenständige Versionen mit Schwerpunkt auf chemischen Produkten (Frazer Musonda) und auf dem Wärmesektor (Matthias Jordan) entwickelt.

Anhand des Modells kann auch mittels verschiedener Verfahren (Monte Carlo, SOBOL) die Sensitivität der Entwicklungen untersucht werden, auf die eine Vielzahl an Parameter einen Einfluss hat, besonders im komplexen Bereich der Biomassenutzung.
