Groundwater shortage - which regions are particularly affected
Although it rained relatively often in the spring, groundwater levels remain low due to the drought of recent years. The situation is particularly tense in the Altmark region, where some monitoring stations have been indicating falling levels for five years and farmers are having problems cultivating their fields. Some districts have meanwhile issued withdrawal bans - as in Dessau-Rosslau. TV show "MDR Umschau" looks into the question of how allotment gardeners deal with this. Experts from the Environmental Research Center (UFZ) in Leipzig explain the situation. (From minute 17:15) - watch the video

Congratulations to our new Scientists!
In 2022, two of our doctoral students submitted and successfully defended their dissertations. Pia Ebeling and Guilherme Nogueira both graduated with the grade magna cum laude. Carolin Winter followed with grade summa cum laude in March 2023 - Bravo! Congratulations to all of them!
Benedikt Werner also submitted his dissertation recently, we wish him good luck for the defense!
BMBF project "NITRAT-LURCH"
The BMBF-funded project NITRAT-LURCH started in March 2023 and, together with partners at the Technical University of Munich and others, will test a new technology that can be used to stimulate denitrification in groundwater: Guilherme Nogueira and Jan Fleckenstein know more.
