The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to work in an international project which includes partners from France, USA, China and Germany with multidisciplinary research expertise.
The three overarching objectives of P³ focus on 1) the collection of historical data on mountain ranges and network of mountain observation sites, 2) the analysis of the current patterns of pollutants, people and pathogens, and 3) the synthesis of all results and the establishment of mountain ecosystems as sentinels of change.
More specifically, P³ will
a) develop an open-access database on historical data from a multitude of sources, including publicly accessible databases, scientific literature and grey literature on P³ related socio-ecological aspects of the four mountain ranges,
b) conduct systematic comparisons between well-studied sites and newly set up sites along altitudinal gradients,
c) perform a structured multi-scale scenario analysis aiming to determine causalities and correlations between natural and socio-economic drivers and pressures and biodiversity,
d) identify alternative approaches for the reduction of the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems and more sustainable land management, referring to both resilience as a key criterion and to co-production processes with practitioners and local experts, and
e) develop relevant essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) for communication with stakeholders and policymakers.

The results obtained by the P³ research will expand current understanding of global change impacts mountain freshwater ecosystems and their functioning as well as the biodiversity they comprise. Scientists will be able to utilize the insights uncovered by P³ to execute a wide range of research, from focused investigations studying the factors impacting different species groups to holistic studies examining impacts of changed biodiversity composition and drivers that alter ecosystems. Moreover, conservationists and environmental managers will use the results of our research to develop effective programs to control and manage populations of mountain ecosystems on a global scale. For example, P³ will develop predictive methods to understand where conservation efforts are most necessary to mitigate the effects of biodiversity loss in the wild. The results of P³ also have broader societal impacts by evaluating the risk that changes in mountain ecosystems have on human well-being and on societal prospects.

The aim of the PhD project is to identify how, when and where soil C management practices control the natural attenuation of reactive N as it moves from land to water. We offer a PhD position for the comparative analysis of metal-containing membrane proteins in anaerobic microorganisms. .Nowadays, neonicotinois are among the most used class of insecticides, accounting for a quarter of the insecticide market
turnover worldwide. Due to several studies on adverse ecological effects produced by neonicotinoids application, they came under an increasing concern over their environmental impacts, until the ban decided by EU in the 2013. In that respect, sublethal effects play a key role; extremely low doses of contaminant, considered safe by the risk assassment framework, can have adverse long term effects when interacting with other environmental stressors.

The light-induced transformation of organic compounds is an important degradation mechanism naturally occurring in surface waters and atmospheric media. Humic substances and pigments are the major naturally present photosensitizers in the environment, acting as photosensitizers which can generate a variety of reactive species, such as OH radicals and excited triplet states (3HS*), promoting the degradation of organic compounds (Zhang et. al., ES&T, 2014).
Research questions addressed: 1) Do carbon and hydrogen isotope fractionation occur during the photolysis of OPs? 2) Can photosensitization pathways of OPs be characterized using CSIA?
