The crystalline basement is likely to be the largest geothermal resource in Germany.

The main goal of this research project is to develop an integrated methodology for the exploration of geothermal resources and to advance Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technology as a standard technology.

This project focuses on risk mitigation during exploration and includes from the start an economical analysis of the measures taken and of potential customers. The detection of fault and fracture zones is essential for any risk mitigation during exploration. The MET Department aims to detect fault and fracture zones utilising surface geophysics and by measuring the radon content in the soil gas and groundwater, using minimally invasive Direct Push sampling technology. Due to its innovative, resource-conserving, fast and efficient nature, this approach represents an ideal exploration concept.
