Soil genesis is driven by different intervening factors, i.e. the parent material, the relief, the climate, the organisms involved and time. It has to be emphasized that soil edification is a biologically driven process. Therefore, the main focus within the department of soil ecology is on answering following questions:
- What are the functions of microorganisms in soil genesis?
- What are the roles played by microorganisms in the energy and matter fluxes and in their transformation within functioning soils?
- Which are the key players in soil microbial communities?
Answering these questions will allow us to improve a sustainable use of soils.
