In all industrialised countries large contaminated sites, so-called megasites, are a major risk for ecosystems and human health. The scale and complexity of the soil and groundwater contaminations related with these megasites poses difficult technical and management challenges for risk-management and reuse.
The Department Groundwater Remediation develops and coordinates projects that target at these challenges. Together with internal and external partners and in the framework of the SAFIRA-II-Research Program methods and tools for site investigation and monitoring, novel remediation technologies as well as model-based approaches for site rehabilitation are proven and optimised at reference sites and subsequently transferred into practise.
