Work package 4: Public preferences

Stakeholder preferences can be very different and also be a source of trade-offs. In order to investigate this preference heterogeneity comprehensively and including its underlying motivations, WP4 combines different methods such as economic valuation (choice experiment, possibly deliberative) and qualitative, group-based methods (e.g. focus groups). Preferences for both ecosystem services and possible strategies to achieve them (e.g. organic agriculture, agroforestry) will be explored to later shed light on tensions between preferred strategies and their potential to provide the desired ecosystem services. To support the work in WP5, indicators for the extent and persistence of social trade-offs (resulting from preference heterogeneity) will be developed.
