Work package 2: Ecosystem service models

For the ecosystem services selected in WP1, yield, drought protection, carbon sequestration and nitrate leaching reduction, WP2 identified models that were suitable for our research questions and data availability. After discussions with experts and a literature review, we selected the Australian model Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM). In parallel, we are preparing a publication on the "Opportunity map approach for agricultural landscapes", which we have already presented at several conferences (e.g. ECEM in September 2023, see abstract on p.112). Evaluation criteria were developed and agreed with experts to assess the potential for improving ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, drought protection, biodiversity habitat and water quality through management changes. This approach was applied to our case study region.
    
In addition, an appropriate method for incorporating climate change into the optimisation (e.g. through scenarios or parameter variations) and uncertainties will be identified and options for dealing with them in the optimisation process will be developed.
