Research

Our integrated environmental research with six research units (1) Ecosystems of the Future, (2) Water Resources and the Environment, (3) Chemicals in the Environment, (4) Environmental Technology and Biotechnology, (5) Smart Models and Monitoring as well as (6) Environment and Society is our answer to the stimuli created by society in the face of global change: climate change, land-use change, population growth, rising food and energy requirements. The research units 1-4 are core subjects, whereas the research units 5 and 6 are cross-sectional competences.

Integration Platforms (IP)

Integrated and transdisciplinary research takes place within the Integration Platforms (IP). The Integration Platforms organize the UFZ contributions to the research program across research units and deparmtents.

Themes

Dealing with complex environmental issues, the environmental research requires an integrated approach. Climate research and bioeconomy are two examples which are running throughout the key research topics at the UFZ.

Projects (Third-party funds)

Research is conducted in over 290 third-party funded projects, with national and international partners from science, politics, economics and society. Here you will find a database of our third-party funded projects.

Platforms & Observatories

The UFZ technology platforms and high-tech labs offer vital links to science and industry. Experimental platforms and observatories are indispensable in environmental research, if we are to observe the impacts of land-use change and climate change.

Knowledge and Technology Transfer

The UFZ generates sound knowledge, technological solutions and courses of action for decision-makers. An integral part of environmental research is the transfer of knowledge and technologies to society and commerce. Strategic elements of our knowledge transfer activities comprise activities in advisory boards and expert or technical committees, establishment of expert networks as well as the establishment of knowledge platforms and focal points. Strategic elements of our technology transfer are industrial networks, spin-offs, open source solutions or technology offers.
