Research Project Leipziger BlauGrün Phase I
The Leipzig BlueGreen research project focuses on the development of resource-efficient urban districts. In cooperation with the city of Leipzig, the investor, business enterprises and other scientific institutions, the UFZ is developing a concept for climate-adapted water and energy management using the Leipzig 416 neighbourhood as an example. The city of Leipzig is thus one of the model municipalities funded in the Resource Efficient Urban Neighbourhoods - RES:Z initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Research project Leipzig BlueGreen Phase II
The project follows the need of the City of Leipzig to extend the research subject of project phase I to existing neighbourhoods: In response to the climate emergency, Leipzig City Council decided to increase the resilience of existing neighbourhoods to the local consequences of climate change in addition to new buildings. In cooperation with the Leipziger Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft (LWB), BlueGreen modernisation concepts for the existing portfolio are to be developed and jointly implemented.
During "Funding Phase 1", Leipzig, as a model city for resource-efficient urban neighbourhoods (RES:Z), declared a "climate emergency" due to a particularly critical development and therefore outlined measures to implement " [...] climate-friendly and energy-efficient neighbourhoods" to meet the city's climate targets. A major challenge now is to translate the political targets and resolutions into municipal action in the context described. To this end, concrete measures must be defined for the decision-makers, implemented and consolidated in the transformation process.
