THE UFZ
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, was founded in 1991 under the name of UFZ – Environmental Research Centre Leipzig-Halle. The institute currently employs 1100 people at campuses in Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg.
The UFZ helps decision makers in politics, industry and the civil society to better understand the environmental consequences of human activity and supports the decision making process. The UFZ takes on the challenges that society faces and creates knowledge and technology to enable environmental problems to be recognized early and prevention-oriented solutions to be developed. The UFZ has comprehensive experience in integrated environmental research, owns innovative scientific infrastructure and maintains important national and international networks. To fulfil its mission, the UFZ relies on the creativity and motivation of its employees, their personal and professional development, the support of young scientists and working conditions at UFZ that attract leading international scientists. The UFZ has taken on a leading role in the investigation of hydrological extreme events, for instance by setting up the Mitteldeutsche Klimabüro and by leading the Helmholtz initiative MOSES (Modular Observation Solutions for Earth Systems).
