April 2018

How did you learn about the UFZ?

At the end of my Bachelor degree at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, I was looking for the best possibility to set a focus on environmental chemistry in my further studies. I found this possibility (on the internet) at UFZ in Leipzig.

Why did you come to the UFZ?

In my Master degree, I did a practical course at UFZ, which was followed by a student assistant job and finally my Master thesis. With the excellent technical features and the possibility to connect with scientists from different disciplines in the other departments, UFZ offers optimum conditions for a PhD project.

What do you like about the city you live in?

As I am coming from Cologne, a city with a small percentage of historic (living) buildings, I really enjoy living in an affordable flat in one of them, especially in the alternative flair of Connewitz. Even though Leipzig is not located at the sea, the lakes in the surroundings are really able to keep up (Ever tried windsurfing on the Cospudener lake? You should.). Furthermore, I am glad that I found such a great gym to pursue my hobby thaiboxing.

How do you like it at the UFZ / in HIGRADE?

I really enjoy the working conditions at UFZ, which enable me to get the maximum out of my research. In case of open questions, there can always be an expert found to ask. It is reassuring that with HIGRADE, PhD students have infrastructure to help them not getting lost in their work, and to get access to soft skills not taken into account in university.
